We recently met Nicole at one of our Launchwise events. She was so TOTALLY FAB, we HAD to find out where all this fabulousness was coming from. So, without further ado, meet Nicole Marshall!
1.) Tell me a little bit about you & your business. At first I was shocked when asked to be one of the featured entrepreneurs, mainly because I always felt you needed to own a business to be classified as one. After doing a little research I came to the conclusion that being Nicole Marshall is my business. I work full time as an intensive care nurse at a level one trauma hospital here in Minneapolis. I have worked on projects that focus on improving patient care in the intensive care setting. Last year I was approved a $2000 grant to help propose and develop a new protocol for managing pain in intubated patients. Daily I take chances and use my knowledge to help patients have the best possible outcome. It is odd to think of a registered nurse as an entrepreneur, but we establish the business of saving lives. For me to progress and do the best I can, I need to take initiative in my practice. Now that is my “professional” side….my other half is more into building an individual name.
I call it my “other half”, this is the side that gets seen as the model in the social realm here in Minneapolis. I do freelance modeling work, which has turned out to be a great experience. Though I am not as aggressive as I could be, I have quickly learned that people know my name and have an expectation of who I am. I love fashion, and love being able to help support community businesses and designers. Am I considered as a magnate within the fashion community? I believe so. I am just someone who is doing what she loves. Supporting others who love what they are doing. With fashion and modeling it is all about taking chances and jumping through that door of opportunity when it opens!
Outside of all that, I love to be at home with my husband and two Cavalier King Charles pups. I love meeting new people and I get bored easily. So I am always up for a challenge or something creative to get me motivated. I am assertive when it comes to things I love, and I believe in being honest. I refuse to play the MN nice game. Honestly is the best policy and will get you far in your endeavors.
2.) Do you have any upcoming projects or events you want to talk about?
As far as nursing I am looking at taking my CCRN, which is a specialty within critical care. Graduate school bounces around in my mind constantly. Ideally I would love to work in a cardiovascular center, if I could get into an OR and work with a cardiovascular or cardiothoracic surgeon that would be ideal.
With modeling I am in a show June 20th for FGI here in Minneapolis. I will be doing Wilson’s Leather again in July and I believe there is a talk of a summer bikini show at Calhoun Beach Club. There are always little events that pop up and if I am not working at the hospital I try to get out and attend as many events as I can. There are always photo shoot opportunities that come up also. I am just honored to be a part of such a creative industry.
3.) How long have you been an entrepreneur? If you really think about it, everyone in their own way is a leader or entrepreneur. Everyone wants to advance in their work; everyone wants to climb that ladder of success. So for me technically I have been developing my name since I left high school. If you look at my modeling success, that has been only a year. It was something I stumbled into, but fell in love with and wanted to make the most of a small window of opportunity. It is true doors open in our lives all the time; we just need to be strong enough to walk through them.
4.) How’d you get started, what were the first few years like? Everything takes work and effort. If your heart isn’t into it, then you will get nothing from it. Nothing is for free, nor does it come easy. I have worked hard for everything I have and you always need to keep your head up even when you’re told no. There are also going to be the “haters”…which really threw me for a loop. How can someone be mean to someone they don’t know. Again, you learn to seek out the positive people and quickly all the negative things die away. You cannot spend your energy concerned with the negative or you will have nothing left to give to yourself or others.
5.) What’s your favorite part of running your business? Knowing I am helping others. Being a role model and being that positive influence in someone’s life is amazing. Even if it’s for a brief moment in time, knowing that you influenced someone or encouraged someone to become the person they always wanted to be is nothing but pure happiness for me.
6.) How did you get connected to Launchwise? What is your favorite part about being connected to Launchwise? Networking is SO important regardless of your career. It is sometimes hard for me to get to events based on my nursing work schedule, but through my friends and social networking I have been able to be a part of a great group of professionals who are motivating and encouraging.
7.) Who have you met at one of our events that you’re looking forward to stay connected with? Tough question since I am new to the group. Ask me in a couple months 😉
8.) You make it look so easy. What business advice do you have for other entrepreneurs? (Maybe specific to running a new business or growing a business, etc.) Keep going. Keep chasing your dream. Work hard and it will pay off. Do what is in your heart. If you do not have passion in your career/business it will be difficult to keep it afloat. Always have a support system, as it will keep you sane! Laugh often, especially at yourself!!! Take chances and never look back. The past is in the past for a reason, learn from mistakes and move forward.
9.) Who’s is your entrepreneurial idol? I would have to say Stephanie Lake. Not only is she my friend, but she is an amazing business woman. She is smart, driven and extremely talented. I admire her casualness and her ability to juggle multiple responsibilities at once all the while looking flawless.
10.) Do you have a favorite quote? I don’t think I can put a swear word in here? (lol) It sounds odd coming from someone who is spiritual, but the serenity prayer is one that goes through my mind when I feel I am at a road block.
11.) What is your favorite meal? Hands down, sushi. I love sashimi sushi.
12.) How can we connect with you?
