I’ve been watching sports (albeit reluctantly) and it got me thinking. Sports teams know exactly who does what. The quarterback is there to throw the ball. The receiver catches the ball. And if we took a closer look at their training, you’d probably see that quarterbacks spend all their time practicing their THROWING – the one thing that they’re already GOOD at. Take it a step even further – you probably won’t find any quarterbacks practicing their kicking skills. Why would they? They’re the QUARTERBACK! Where the quarterback is weak – catching the ball, kicking the ball, coaching other players, defense – there’s someone else playing those positions.
Why can’t we be more like pro-football?
Granted, most entrepreneurs and businesses start out small – we don’t have teams where individuals can play different positions. If we take an even closer look, with most entrepreneurs and small businesses – there’s always at least one person that has to wear MANY hats.
And what happens when we wear too many hats?
Jack of All Trades, Master of NONE
EXACTLY. Not only are we NOT “masters” of anything, everything we do barely makes the grade, slices the cheese, hits the target – you get it. We’re barely good at ANYTHING we do.
And what happens when we’re not GREAT or even GOOD at what we’re doing? We loose our PASSION. One of the biggest motivators for entrepreneurs and small businesses is PASSION. Take that away? And you’ve got a business that looses money at every turn. One that we the hate more and more every day.
Would you ever hire an accountant to do your marketing or your website? Why would you?
Would you ever hire a marketing person to do your taxes? Don’t even try it!
Would you ever hire a biologist to paint a wall mural? What do you think you’ll get?
So, then why do entrepreneurs & small businesses try to do it all ourselves?
Many times it comes down to our budgets. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the same budgets as professional football teams? Wouldn’t THAT be nice?
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out when you’re doing more harm than good. (Remember that marketing guru who did the taxes? THAT kind of harm can cost you.) Being an entrepreneur, starting a business or running a small business, we must identify both our strengths AND our weaknesses. Position ourselves to take care of the details that we are not only qualified for, but GOOD at and equally important, identify the tasks or areas of weakness – the, find the money or resources to hire the right person to take care of those details for us. Although it might have a financial cost, the peace of mind we will get from a job well-done, the time we get back to do the kinds of things that we ARE good at, the decrease in frustration – these are opportunity costs that will pay for itself over time.
Once you’ve identified your areas of weaknesses, figure out what kinds of services you need to help you compensate. There are TONS of small businesses and consultants ready, able and eager to take on your project or task – however big or small. Once you’ve identified what needs to be done, start looking for those services, price them and budget accordingly! You’ll find that taking these types of tasks/weaknesses off your plate, will give you the ability to find MORE work, make MORE money, have MORE time available to do the things that YOU want to do. You’ll have much MORE passion for YOUR work, for YOUR business, for YOUR life!
